Privacy Statement

What this site collects, what it does not, and how to ask us to change or remove something.

Last updated 28 July 2026.

July Diary is a public archive of the July Revolution in Bangladesh. This statement explains what the site collects, what it does not, and what you can ask us to do about it. Questions go to info@julydiary.com.

The short version

  • There is no analytics, no advertising and no tracking on this site. No Google Analytics, no pixels, no fingerprinting, no third-party scripts.
  • We do not sell, rent or share personal data.
  • You can read the entire archive without an account.

What is collected

Server logs

Like any web server, ours records requests: IP address, date and time, the page requested, the referring page and your browser's user-agent string. These logs exist to keep the site running and to identify abuse. They are not used to build a profile of you.

If you create an account or comment

Comments require an account. Signup is by invitation. If you have one, we hold the email address you signed up with, any name you choose to display, and the comments you write. Your email address is never displayed publicly.

If you write to us

If you send a correction, a takedown request, a contribution or an ordinary email, we keep that message and your address so we can act on it and so there is a record of why something in the archive changed.

Cookies and local storage

This site sets no advertising or analytics cookies. What it does use:

  • Preview access. While the archive is in preview it is behind a shared password, and a cookie remembers that you entered it. This will go away when the archive opens publicly.
  • Account sessions. If you sign in as a member or as staff, a session cookie keeps you signed in. Signing out removes it.
  • Your graphic-content setting is kept in your browser's local storage, not in a cookie. It never leaves your device and is never sent to the server.
  • Cloudflare sits in front of this site to serve it quickly and to absorb attacks. It may set its own security cookies and keeps its own request logs. See Cloudflare's privacy policy for what it does with them.

Who your data is shared with

Nobody, other than the infrastructure needed to serve the site: our own server, and Cloudflare as described above. There are no advertisers, no data brokers and no analytics providers. We disclose information only where the law requires it, and we will resist requests that appear to be aimed at identifying contributors to this archive.

How long things are kept

Server logs are kept for a short period and then rotated away. Account details are kept while the account exists. Correspondence about a correction or takedown is kept as long as the archive does, because it is the evidence for why a record reads the way it does.

If you appear in this archive

This is the part most likely to matter to you, and it is deliberately not buried at the bottom.

This archive contains photographs and video of real people taken during a period of protest and violence, and a memorial that names people who were killed. Much of it was contributed by third parties rather than photographed by us.

If you are in this archive and do not want to be, write to info@julydiary.com. If you are a member of the family of someone named in the memorial and something is wrong — a spelling, a date, a photograph, a detail of their life — write to the same address. Say which page, and how we can tell it is about you. We will reply.

Requests that concern someone's safety are acted on first and the material is covered while we look into it, rather than after.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to how it is used. Email info@julydiary.com. We will not charge you and we will not make you justify the request.

Where the law lets us keep something despite a deletion request — for example a documented takedown decision — we will tell you plainly which part we are keeping and why.

Children

This site is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from them. Note that the archive itself contains images of children, including children who were killed.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS. Staff access requires an account with a specific role, and material still under review is not reachable by any public URL. No system is perfect; if you find a weakness, please tell us at info@julydiary.com rather than publishing it.

Changes

If this statement changes materially, the date at the top changes and the substance of the change will be described here.
